The knee-cap (patella) is important for the transmission of strength of the musculature. Carilage damage, arthrosis or a dislocation (luxation) of the patella can cause functional disorders and severe pains. These occur especially after sitting for a long time as well as while descending stairs and walking downhill. Wrong and over-straining also lead to subsequent damage to the cartilage layer of the patella. Mechanical and enzymatical damage form an inflammatory "vicious circle" that causes further inflammations with the increased cartilage attrition. By smoothing the cartilage, abrasion or transplantation of autologous cartilage cells the complete cartilage attrition can be stopped. For pressure relief and centering of the patella the so-called lateral retinaculum splitting or the operation according to Blauth are used.
